How To Enable Automatic Logon in Windows 2000/XP Pro

How To Enable Automatic Logon in Windows 2000/XP Pro With a Non-domain System

A: In Control Panel, double-click Users and Passwords. Click to clear the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer check box. Click the Advanced tab. Click to clear the Require users to press Ctrl-Alt-Del before logging on check box.

How To Enable Automatic Logon in Windows 2000/XP Pro With a Domain System

A: To enable auto  logon in Windows 2000/XP with a domain system, you need to edit the registry. Start Regedt32.exe and locate the following registry key:  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon; Enter your domain name, account name, and password, using the following values : DefaultDomainName, DefaultUserName, and DefaultPassword. (NOTE: The DefaultDomainName and DefaultUserName values may already exist.) .

If the DefaultPassword value does not exist, create it. To do so: On the Edit menu, click Add Value; In the Value Name box, type DefaultPassword; In the Data Type box, click REG_SZ.; Click OK; In the String Editor box, type your password. Click OK and save your changes. (NOTE: If no DefaultPassword string is specified, Windows automatically changes the value of the AutoAdminLogon key from 1 (true) to 0 (false). This disables the AutoAdminLogon feature. This behavior also occurs if the DefaultPassword string is specified but the password is left blank or null.)

  1. On the Edit menu, click Add Value. Type AutoAdminLogon in the Value Name box. Click REG_SZ in the Data Type box. Enter 1 in the String box. Save your changes.
  2. Quit Regedt32.exe.
  3. Shut down Windows and turn off the computer.
  4. Restart your computer and Windows 2000. You should be able to log on automatically now.

How to filter unwanted websites on your home network for free

What is ‘Content Filtering’?

Your normal web filter such as Cyber Patrol, squidGuard, Net Nanny, etc, has a very large list of bad sites. If you try to go to these sites you will get blocked. I.e. your web access is filtered by web address.

The web is a fast changing place and even large web search engines such as Google or Altavista or Yahoo don’t even know of half of it. This makes filtering by web address (URL) difficult as sites change and new ones come up all the time. It is impossible to have comprehensive filtering using just URLs. What is needed is something to check every page you (or your children) ever access for ‘bad’ subjects such as drugs, profanities, hate, pornography, etc, and disallow it if it’s not suitable. This is called ‘Content Filtering’.

This is why you need DansGuardian as it makes the web a cleaner, safer, place for you and your children.

As a side effect, DansGuardian also helps maintain freedom of speech by moving the censoring to the choice of the individual rather than imposing a specific ideal on the whole world.

What is the IPCop firewall?

IPCop Firewall is a Linux firewall distribution geared towards home and SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) users. The IPCop interface is very user-friendly and task-based. IPCop offers the critical functionality of an expensive network appliance using stock, or even obsolete, hardware and OpenSource Software.

OLD PC + IPCOP = Secure Internet Appliance

IPCop lets you take an old PC and convert it into an appliance that will.

1. Secure your home network from the internet.
2. Improve the performance of web browsers (by keeping frequently used information)

All this functionality can be managed from a simple to use web interface, even updates and patches can be installed using a web browser.
Remember IPCop works with most home networks and small office networks, dial up modems, cable modems, ADSL, Leased lines and ISDN. It also lets several PCs share connections to the internet. If you have an always on connection to can even use IPCop to protect your web and email servers. IPCop also has remote management meaning you can securely update and reconfigure your IPCop firewall from anywhere with an internet connection!

Putting it all together:

Using both these tools you can use an old PC as a single gateway point though which all your web traffic is filtered and blocked for your entire network.

Here is a basic overview on the installation: (Please refer to related websites for more detailed instructions)

  1. Download and burn the IPCop ISO to a CD
  2. Boot from CD and follow install instructions *** Warning: This will erase all existing data from the hard disk ***
  3. Login to command line prompt, using user: root and password specified during install
  4. Run “setup” and configure the network settings
  5. Configure for your network for RED+GREEN
  6. Download http://transact.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/firewalladdons/addons-2.3-CLI-b2.tar.gz to your PC
  7. Using WinSCP (PORT 222), login to the IPCop and copy the addons-2.3-CLI-b2.tar.gz file to the IPCop root directory
  8. Run following commands:
    • cd /
    • tar zxvf addons-2.3-CLI-b2.tar.gz
    • cd addons
    • ./setup -i
  9. Download http://internode.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/firewalladdons/Copplus-2.2-GUI-b3.tar.gz to your PC
  10. Goto the IPCop administration web page usually http://youripcopIP:81/
  11. In the system section of your IPCop interface goto AddOns
  12. Refresh the browser and the Add Ons tab should be on the far right
  13. Then at the bottom of the Add Ons page, browse to the “Install new addon” and upload Copplus-2.2-GUI-b3.tar.gz to the IP Cop box
  14. The “Content Filter” option will then appear in the Services section
  15. Open the AddOns Updates panel and install any Cop+ Updates using the download – browse to – and upload process
  16. Configure the filter as desired

Need to unlock your engin box?

Firstly, make sure that you have converted your engin account to a BYO account if you plan to continue to use it, and write down your username and password.

**** Warning: This will reset all settings on the box to the factory defaults ****

  1. Disconnect your computer and the box from the internet
  2. Pick up your phone handset and dial ****
  3. At the menu prompt dial 73738#
  4. Then press 1 to confirm the factory reset
  5. Pick up your phone handset and dial ****
  6. At the menu prompt dial 1# and write down the IP Address
  7. Go to the IP Address that was announced in a web browser
  8. Select ‘admin’ and ‘advanced’ options
  9. Go to the provisioning tab
  10. Change ‘Provision Enable’ to no

Once all these steps are done, you can use the box with any provider, or continue to use it with engin using your BYO username and password.

Engin 5mins 32secs call drop outs!

At 5 minute intervals during a call engin’s servers will send a re-invite. If it doesn’t get a reply within 32 seconds, it terminates the session. This is done so if you drop your internet connection, you don’t end up with calls staying open and you still getting billed for them. Other VSPs will do similar things at different time intervals e.g. Nodephone drop at ~11 minutes. Engin probably have one of the smallest re-invite intervals and hence to the uneducated, it could appear to only happen to engin and not other providers.

It is generally always a NAT issue in local hardware (router). If the re-invite request is not transversing your NAT router and reaching your ATA, your ATA never has a chance to respond, hence the call is terminated at 5:32.

Essential Computer Programs

When installing a windows computer for the first time, there are always a small number of programs that just need to be installed by default.

Here are some of my favourites: (These are all freely available programs)

  • Foxit PDF Reader (Acrobat reader is way to slow and bulky)
  • Cute PDF Writer (Still the best free PDF writer around)
  • Grisoft AVG Anti-Virus (Free Edition for home users)
  • 7-Zip (for opening .rar comressed files)

These are some other common programs that I usually install:

  • Real VNC (For remote access)
